Record Store Day brings out concerts, DJs, exclusive music – STLtoday.com

It’s time to put down the iPod or whatever player you use to listen to your digital music — at least for a day.

Saturday is Record Store Day, which since 2007 has been celebrating the now-unique culture that is the “record store.” You know — the place where music lovers used to go, and in some cases still do, to purchase actual take-home recordings of music.

Record Store Day is supported by many in the music industry as more and more artists release music sold exclusively in participating record stores.

Among the artists with exclusive content this year are Kings of Leon, Of Montreal, Katy Perry, Skrillex, the Dave Matthews Band, the Flaming Lips, Fleetwood Mac, Paramore, Jay-Z/Linkin Park, the Civil Wars, David Bowie, Death Cab for Cutie, Devo, Ray LaMontagne and Little Dragon.

Artists often will release special-edition vinyl versions of their music for the first time, making the annual event huge for collectors.

Local independent record stores celebrate as well with free concerts, DJ spins, giveaways and more. And, of course, it’s at these stores where music lovers can find the product.

Here’s a look at some of the things happening locally, beginning with Euclid Records, which is celebrating its first Record Store Day in its new location. Euclid Records kicks off its festivities Friday and continues Saturday.
