Intel Corp., the kingpin of chips for personal computers, has suffered as that market has contracted. But the Silicon Valley company has built an even stronger position in computer rooms, leading to unusual power over pricing.
The average price of chips that Intel sells for server systems rose to $629 in the first quarter from $429 in the same period of 2007, a 47% increase, according to Mercury Research.
