Opening Ceremony Founders Announce More Details About Plans With Intel … – Forbes
Store founders Humberto Leon and Carol Lim discussed the device during a New York Fashion Week talk at the Neuehouse collective and moderated by Business of Fashion founder Imran Amed. They declined to give complete specifics about the nature of the pairing other than to say that their main goal was to create something stylish people would aspire to wear every day.
“We wanted to create something that can live with you on a daily basis,” Leon said, adding that it would have a specific function and look cool. Lim said that Intel (which is the world’s largest computer-chip manufacturer) would rely heavily on the duo’s personal sense of style and design. They are also the creative directors of Kenzo.
A statement from Intel during the initial announcement last month said that as part of the pairing the company will engage the CFDA to create an educational community for 400 technology developers and fashion designers to exchange ideas about wearable technology. The collaboration will produce a gadget that will be sold at Barneys and OC before 2015.
Leon also disclosed that the next feature country in Opening Ceremony stores and online will be Russia (each year Leon and Lim choose a new country whose brands and designers to highlight by selling their work). It’s currently the Year of Belgium, a collaboration that will terminate in September.
The longtime unrest about anti-gay policies in Russia—recently exacerbated by focus on both the rock band Pussy Riot and the Winter Olympics–was a notable though not a primary factor in their decision to sell Russian-related products, Leon and Lim said.
“We wanted something that would raise awareness,” Leon said. “But we also always want to do something exciting.”
